I confess to reading this book as part of my research into the location, and broomsquires, but I absolutely loved the story. Accepting that it is very much of its time, the effective evocation of place, and the sharp focus on character meant that the I found the simple plot to be gripping throughout the book. Yes, it is depressing, and has a Hardyesque foreboding, but it is beautifully crafted, and for someone who grew up wandering the paths in the bottom of the Devil's Punch Bowl, and seeking the sailor's stone up on the old road, it was a joy.
