Sam Stone has a little over a year before the World Invasion. His mother has given him one clear instruction: Stay out of the dungeon. Sam understands why. Starter dungeons are dangerous, and there are safer ways to prepare for integration.
Sam is young, impatient, and very aware that the invasion is coming whether he feels ready or not. Then the System offers him a shiny door, and Sam opens it.
By the time he gets out, his father's spear is broken, his build is taking shape around bad footing and a distressing amount of fairy-themed magic, and the System has started taking a personal interest in his progression.
That would be concerning enough if the System were merely powerful. Unfortunately, it is creative. Worse, it is bored.
The System turns survival into progression. Bad footing becomes movement. Improvised defenses become Techniques. The things Sam does to stay alive keep becoming permanent parts of his build.
Together with Pip, whose anxiety is becoming alarmingly useful, and Tamsin, a healer discovering that Life magic has offensive applications, Sam forms Team Dairy and fights to survive the events reshaping their world.
Getting stronger is only part of the problem. Their families need shelter, defensible walls, and somewhere worth surviving in.
Every challenge can make them stronger. Every victory can buy them something real. And every reward gives the System another chance to decide what kind of people they are becoming.
Sam wants enough power to keep everyone alive. The System wants to find out what he can become.
Broken Spears is the first book in Shiny Lights & System Fights, a humorous, character-driven progression fantasy with tactical combat, loyal friendships, intrusive cosmic bureaucracy, and a godlike System with magnificent imagination, terrible judgment, and far too much free time.
