The 'Britannia' and Her Contemporaries offers an authoritative and detailed account of one of the most celebrated vessels in maritime history. Written by the renowned yachting expert Brooke Heckstall-Smith, this work chronicles the illustrious career of the Britannia, the legendary racing cutter commissioned for the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII. The book serves as a definitive record of the vessel's dominance and longevity in the world of competitive sailing, spanning over four decades of prestige on the water.
Beyond its focus on this iconic royal yacht, the narrative provides a comprehensive overview of the golden age of yacht racing. It examines the technological advancements, design philosophies, and fierce rivalries that defined the era. Heckstall-Smith provides technical insights and historical context regarding the various contemporaries that challenged Britannia, offering a broader look at the evolution of naval architecture and sporting culture. This volume is an essential resource for enthusiasts of maritime history and sailing, capturing the elegance and competitive spirit of a bygone era through the lens of its most famous participant.
