To-day we are occupied simply with the consideration of the Character of Man; the contemplation of manhood brings around us a throng of ancient characters and of historic associations, and fills the memory with thoughts of great men, some, perhaps, hardly yet passed from amongst us; yet, when associated with our own times, it brings back especially to our remembrance one honoured and familiar name. There are in every age men who bear the stamp of their age's progressive character; men who stand as landmarks amidst the waves of Time, and show us the direction in which those waves advance. To such men, among many who may be reverenced, we at all times instinctively refer. Such a man in our age was Arnold.
