Karl is an upwardly mobile Black photographer who is tired of one-night stands and looking for something more. Donovan is twenty-one, Caribbean, guarded about his sexuality, and determined to prove his masculinity.

When the two men meet in London, attraction quickly becomes something harder to control. Over three encounters, separated by a month, sex, jealousy, race, class, and the fear of HIV force them to confront what they want from each other.

First staged in London in 1992, Boy with Beer is Paul Boakye's two-character play about Black gay love at a moment when both queerness and AIDS carried very different consequences.

The play was subsequently published by Methuen Drama in Black Plays 3 and is included in Bloomsbury's Black British Queer Plays and Practitioners.

This standalone edition includes production photographs from the most recent staging, together with a foreword and afterword by Paul Boakye.
