At fourteen, Ann Fielding has already faced hardship. Orphaned at the age of three, she and her younger brother, John, have lived for over 10 years under the caring but loose supervision of their Uncle Jim. When Ann becomes curious about her past, they embark on an adventure to rediscover their childhood home. They find the abandoned house and make it livable, beginning with a few pieces of broken-down furniture. With their uncle's blessing, the siblings set out to build an independent life.
Ann secures employment in a cotton mill in Oldham spinning cotton thread to support them as the Industrial Revolution sweeps through England. Steam engines are increasingly utilized to power mills, driving the demand for coal and transforming the town into a leading global producer of textiles. Hundreds of mills are established, benefiting from the ample availability of labor, fuel, and the proximity to raw cotton supplied through the international port town of Liverpool.
While being battered by the complexities of adulthood, Ann steels her resolve to carve out a boundless future for her and her family. She soon learns life does not always unfold as planned. Inspired by true events, this story follows a young woman's journey of resilience and determination as she faces the trials and triumphs of England's Industrial Revolution.
