How Organised Gangs Turned the Extortion of Teenagers into a Global Industry - and What It Will Take to End It The internet did not invent sexual extortion. It industrialised the distribution of a very old idea, and the idea is old enough to have had a name in Victorian criminal slang. Four openings, four boys, four timelines measured in hours rather than months. Jordan DeMay in Marquette, dead the same night as the first message. Jack Sullivan in Glenside, dead within twenty-four hours. Ryan Last in San Jose, dead hours after paying a hundred and fifty dollars he could spare against five thousand he could not. Elijah Heacock in Glasgow Kentucky extorted over an image of a body that was never his - it was an AI fake. The introduction establishes the central fact of this book: that financial sextortion is defined not by its cruelty, which is ordinary, but by its speed, which is engineered. Strip away the technology from any case of sexual extortion, in any century, and two components remain. The first is something the victim cannot bear to have seen. This is not an objective quantity. What matters is not the content of the image but the victim's estimate of the social consequence of its release, which is why adolescents are so catastrophically exposed. A seventeen-year-old's estimate of what his peer group will do with a nude photograph of him is not a rational forecast; it is a prediction made by a person for whom the
peer group is the entire world and for whom the humiliation, once begun, feels permanent and total. The second is the deadline. Extortion without time pressure is merely a demand, and a demand can be considered, discussed, refused. The deadline is what converts the demand into a crisis, and the crisis is what prevents the victim from doing the one thing that reliably defeats the crime, which is telling somebody. Modern financial sextortion runs the same escalation in a compressed timeframe. Ryan Last paid a hundred and fifty dollars and was immediately pressed for more. Jordan DeMay paid three hundred against a demand of a thousand, and the demands continued. The offender's assumption in both cases, drawn directly from the advance-fee tradition, is that the first payment is not a settlement but a qualification. It is the reason the advice to victims is so emphatic on this point. Paying does not end it. Paying identifies you as someone who pays.
