The Narthex is the threshold. In the old Church architecture it was the space where those not yet baptized could stand and listen, present to the liturgy without being inside it. It was neither the street nor the sanctuary.

It was the place where the question of belonging had not yet been settled.

That is roughly where artificial intelligence now stands in American church life. It is not in the sanctuary - almost nobody is arguing that it should be.

But it is no longer outside the building either. It is in the bulletin software, the giving platform, the translation headsets, the transcription service that turns the parish council meeting into minutes, the phone in the pocket of the person in the third pew who used it to find the Mass time this morning - and irritates other people around him when he does not turn it off during service and it rings loudly at the wrong time during the Sermon.

It came in quietly, through the doors that were already open, and by the time most congregations noticed it, it had been there for a while.

This is the process documentation of how it arrived - for better or worse.
