I was moved to write this book as my humble contribution toward the struggle for freedom and independence of the Biafran people. For many years, I have watched with deep concern and admiration as men and women of the defunct nation sacrificed their lives and property for this noble cause. I asked myself: How can I also contribute? As a writer, I realized my enduring legacy would be to put words to this struggle-challenging Nigeria's cruelty against the Biafrans (especially the Igbos), saluting the courage of those who risked everything so that others may live, inspiring those yet to join the fight, and persuading the doubters that a free Biafra is not only just but necessary. Biafra declared independence in 1967 because its people were hated, oppressed, attacked, and massacred. More than fifty years after the war that forced them back into Nigeria, they are still hated, oppressed, attacked, and massacred. Nothing has changed. The oppressed, therefore, have no option but to fight for their survival. Only in a sovereign Biafra will its people finally know freedom.
