Two hundred people are chosen by lottery to leave Earth and establish a permanent settlement on another world. They are screened, selected, certified, and sent across the void under a carefully written agreement promising something extraordinary: the right to govern themselves.

And what happens when the legal machinery created to protect the settlement begins to threaten the very society it was meant to preserve?
Told by the woman who drafted many of the documents that govern Bhumi, this is an intimate account of friendship, responsibility, loss, and the unintended consequences of good intentions.
