These two lines start one of the most famous poems in the world - and is from a quatrain contained within the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam translated by Edward Fitzgerald.

Here is an homage to the poetic works of Khayyam. This book, the Best Quatrains by Omar Khayyam - Illustrated collects twenty-seven of the most well known of the hundreds of quatrains the Persian poet wrote over 1000 years ago. And illustrates each poem with original art in the style of various great artists.

The quatrains are presented in the order they were numbered by their translators - twenty-six by Fitzgerald and one by Henry Whinfield. Each quatrain is displayed as a unique poem, standing individually apart from each other. Especially so, as the background illustrations that accompany each quatrain and created in the styles of various different artist - make each page like a slide in slideshow.

The choices of each quatrain selected for this book may seem arbitrary, and in a sense that is true - these are Carl Scott Harker's favorites. Still, the depth of meaning, poetic construction and the sheer joy of reading these particular quatrains are such that many readers will find themselves agreeing with the selections.

Here is a great way to read these beloved poems again and/or to introduce Khayyam's poetry to others. Along with Khayyam's work, the author has included four original quatrains of his own, also illustrated.
