Having developed a one-woman stage production based on Voltaire's satirical tale *Candide, or Optimism* as part of her final-year project at the Vienna Drama School, Johanna Paliege reflects on the process of developing the play. She describes her approach to the literary material, analyses the outcome of her work and seeks to identify which acting methods proved most effective in this context.
