Some places are covered on purpose.
The summer she turns thirteen, Nora Hale is sent north to her grandfather's cabin on Alder Lake while her parents stay home to settle things. She brings a notebook, a compass, and the habit of measuring whatever frightens her.
On the second night, she hears a bell.
It rings at 5:14. Three strokes. It is not the buoy. It comes from under the water, from out past where the clear runs out - and it will not record. She tries twice.
So Nora does what Nora does. She goes looking for the fact underneath. A boatyard kid named Milo helps her, mostly by telling her no more often than anybody else and then coming along anyway.
In a library drawer she finds a surveyor's sheet drawn by hand in November 1961: a valley with a river through it, a road that keeps going where no road goes now, a school house, a meeting house, a burying ground, and thirty-one houses in a place called East Alder. In 1963 the district closed the gates and the valley went under.
The town's relocation list names twenty-seven households.
Neither document is a lie. Both were made carefully, by people doing their jobs. Four families are simply not on the second one, and in the margin beside them, in a clerk's neat hand, are four words that were perfectly correct: no deed of record.
There was also a girl. She was fourteen. She stood up at a town meeting in December of 1962 and would not stop asking, and the following July she was sent away to the state industrial school on the complaint of a parent, for being stubborn, which was a thing a child could be sent away for. Everything anybody said about her was true.
Her name was Clara. She was Nora's great-aunt. And there is nobody left who can make the town listen to her.
Sixty years on, the town wants to clear the shoreline. Nora's grandfather will not answer their letters. And a girl with four folded pages in her back pocket has to work out the hardest thing in the book - not how to be heard, but when the story is not hers to tell.
The Bell Beneath the Lake is a novel for readers ten and up about maps, minutes, and the quiet machinery of the record: how a person can be erased without anybody breaking a single rule, and what one stubborn girl can do about it sixty years later.
There is no villain in it. That is the point.
