A book by Simöne Gall In August 1979, Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, and brothers David J and Kevin Haskins-collectively known as Bauhaus-released their debut single, Bela Lugosi's Dead. It was a sprawling, sepulchral Gothic waltz that would launch a career defined by profoundly complex albums and sublime live performances. By directly invoking the lead actor of the 1931 film Dracula, Bela was instrumental in the rise of a quintessential dark sound culture. Its influence eventually permeated the world of celluloid, securing Bauhaus a historic appearance in the 1983 feature film The Hunger, directed by Tony Scott (brother of the renowned Ridley Scott). Reconstructing the period that led to the band's formation, this book evokes the birth of Bela Lugosi's Dead-the immortal anthem of Bauhaus-bringing to light its historical significance and its most essential elements.
