Turn Bias into an Asset Rather Than a Liability
When people understand why their biases exist and the positive side of it, they can leverage their biases to work for - instead of against - them, deploying the four keys to overcoming bias:
S)ervice: Bringing a sincere desire to serve into every interaction
E)mpathy: Trying to see things as others do
E)mpowerment: Looking for ways to support others in their efforts and growth
N)egotiation: Working toward win-win solutions that benefit everyone involved
This study guide, a companion to the novel, The Price We Pay by Nikki T. Anthony, offers practical examples of the B.E. S.E.E.N. principles at work. It uses chapter one of the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Benjamin Franklin Awards winning book as the foundation to help you better understand bias, how it impacts your interpersonal relationships and communities, and then to formulate plans to counteract bias where necessary.
While The Price We Pay is fiction, the experiences outlined in its pages are pulled from real life. Every person in these pages is impacted, in one way or another, by their own B.I.A.S. and the B.I.A.S. of those around them.
It's our hope that as you work through this study guide you can begin to recognize the impact of B.I.A.S. wherever it appears in your life so you can Take the L.E.A.D. in deciding how you want to handle it rather than reacting and responding to what others say and do.
