Centuries after a chain reaction of orbital missile failures ignited global firestorms and tsunamis, Earth is a fractured world of scattered islands, poisoned seas, and skies that still rain death without warning. From the ruins of Malta rose Skye Stone, a colossal fortress built upward over generations, its hundred-meter walls shielding a small but determined population from the worst of the radiation and the waves that still batter the Mediterranean.
Inside those walls lives Batal Spartan, a young fisherman whose eighteenth birthday marks his passage into adulthood-and into the responsibility of preserving his family's rare genetic resilience. The Spartans are known for surviving radiation longer than most, and Batal's unusually healthy body makes him vital to Skye Stone's future. Yet Batal's life is shaped more by the sea than by politics: the daily rhythm of casting nets, sorting mutated fish from healthy ones, and navigating the unpredictable currents that can turn deadly in moments.
Everything changes when he rescues Danu, a wounded Scottish deerhound-one of the few animal species that adapted even faster than humans. Their bond forms just as the sky erupts again. A malfunctioning orbital platform releases a missile that detonates near the horizon, triggering a massive wave and a firestorm racing toward Skye Stone. Batal and Danu must fight the sea itself, relying on skill, instinct, and sheer will to outrun the destruction.
Survival becomes more than a single escape. As Batal confronts the aftermath-scarred shores, dwindling resources, and the growing realization that Skye Stone's defenses cannot last forever-he is drawn into the deeper mysteries of the fortress's origins. The Book of the Descent tells of the first survivors who built Skye Stone from cellars and basements, but Batal begins to suspect that the truth is far more complex. Why do the missiles still fall? What remains beyond the horizon? And what future can exist for a people trapped between radiation, rising seas, and the ghosts of a war that never truly ended?
Driven by loyalty, courage, and a fierce desire to protect those he loves, Batal must decide whether his destiny lies within the walls that raised him-or beyond them, in the dangerous world that still hides forgotten survivors, lost technologies, and answers that could reshape humanity's fate.
Batal stands alone as a gripping post-apocalyptic adventure about endurance, identity, and the fragile hope that emerges when the world refuses to fall into darkness. It blends visceral survival with emotional depth, exploring what it means to rebuild when every breath is borrowed time.
