The Baltic and Caucasian States: The Nations of to-Day is a comprehensive historical and geopolitical survey edited by John Buchan, offering a detailed look at the emergence of new nations in the aftermath of the Great War and the collapse of the Russian Empire. This volume provides an in-depth analysis of the Baltic republics-Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania-alongside the diverse states of the Caucasus, including Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Through a lens of political transition and cultural identity, the work explores the struggle for independence, the complexities of ethnic composition, and the strategic importance of these regions on the world stage during the early 20th century.
The narrative meticulously tracks the historical trajectories of these nations, from their ancient roots and medieval kingdoms through centuries of foreign hegemony to their eventual bid for sovereignty. Buchan and his contributors examine the social, economic, and political challenges faced by these nations as they sought to establish democratic institutions amidst regional instability. Rich in historical detail and contemporary observation, this work remains a vital resource for understanding the foundational years of states that continue to play a pivotal role in Eurasian geopolitics. It serves as both a historical record and a testament to the enduring spirit of national self-determination.
