Bacchantes is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 1888. The play tells the story of the god Dionysus, who returns to his homeland of Thebes to punish his family for denying his divinity. The women of Thebes, known as the Bacchantes, become devoted followers of Dionysus and engage in wild, frenzied rituals in his honor. The king of Thebes, Pentheus, is skeptical of Dionysus and his followers and attempts to suppress their worship. However, he is eventually lured into the wilderness by the Bacchantes and is torn apart by them in a fit of madness. The play explores themes of religious fanaticism, gender roles, and the dangers of denying the divine.
