Este libro está basado en una historia real.de Isabel, una niña madrileña perteneciente a una familia de clase alta de la capital acaba de llegar a Madrid con su familia tras unos años en Roma donde su padre ha sido Agregado Militar en la Embajada de España. Allà les sorprende el comienzo de la Guerra Civil que desde Madrid les llevará a AlmerÃa y Alicante, donde su padre ejercerá de Comandante Militar de ambas ciudades, para posteriormente verse forzados a un exilio que les obligará a emprender una carrera por la supervivencia a través de Francia e Inglaterra y tras cruzar el Atlántico, llegar a la isla francesa de Martinica desde donde terminarán estableciéndose en Puerto Rico.
La peripecias de una niña que narra las vicisitudes e injusticias de la guerra desde la perspectiva de una muchacha que sale de la niñez y se adentra en la adolescencia y cómo una serie de increÃbles circunstancias lograron que ella y su familia pudieran sobrevivir a la hecatombe que se cernió sobre España, Europa y el mundo entre 1936 y 1939.
