It's the Fall of 1989. Condos now dot Revere Beach Boulevard, the amusements that several generations of Northshore families enjoyed are now a thing of the past. Gone, but for the many who rode those rides, not forgotten. Gone, also, are most of the clubs and eateries that made Revere Beach the place to be on a hot summer day. Or night. Harry's Bar is still there, however. Still the place where the wise guys go on the weekend. Private Detective Paul Costa, a good friend of the proprietor, Harry Mills, usually stops in once or twice during the week. Paul spent countless days of his youth on the Beach, and the memories of those days are forever etched on his brain. It is in Harry's that he meets Eileen Landry on night when she buys him a beer. Paul is single. Eileen is going through a difficult divorce. The attraction is immediate. After dating for a bit, Paul finds out that the man Eileen is divorcing is Ben Landry, accountant for the mob north of Boston and the Glendali Family. Joseph Glendali is the Italian mob boss.. As the relationship deepens, it becomes apparent that Eileen may be in danger should she continue with the divorce. As this is going on, Paul is involved in investigating an art theft from a home in Marblehead, a missing teenager from Lynnfield, a cheating wife, an attempt to smooth things over for a close friend who has run afoul of the Polish gang in Lynn and the Irish gang in Charlestown.
Filled with fun characters, a few gun battles, crisp dialogue, and remembrances of Revere Beach in a better time, ALL DEBTS ARE NOW PAID, is a fun read. A homage to my youth growing up in the fifties and sixties, this is a roller-coaster ride that rivals the famous Cyclone that dominated the Boulevard, back when the beach was the place to be..
