There is now a great deal of talk about algorithms, particularly in relation to computers, Google, the profiling of social media users and the advent of artificial intelligence. But their history goes back much further: the need to solve mathematical problems using appropriate rules of calculation has always been part of human life, starting with very practical needs such as the distribution of agricultural produce, the division of an inheritance, the measurement of a plot of land and the profitability of merchants' businesses.
The Middle Ages, in particular, were a period of great cultural evolution, thanks to the rediscovery of cultural and scientific sources, notably the Greek and Arab mathematicians who, in the 9th century, spread the Indian numeral system throughout the Mediterranean, radically transforming methods of calculation.
Figures such as Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (from whom the term 'algorithm' is derived), the Spanish monks who translated the works of Arab mathematicians into Latin, Fibonacci of Pisa, a merchant and mathematician, the many 'masters of the abacus' who taught arithmetic to merchants' sons, and humanist mathematicians such as Piero della Francesca and Luca Pacioli, all feature prominently in this ensemble narrative, whose central theme is a society that, in the Middle Ages, laid the foundations for our modern era.
