For the better part of his seven-decade career, American painter Alex Katz (born 1927) has been recognized for his detached, minimalist paintings of figures, objects and nature rendered in swaths of richly hued color. However, his later works, made from the 1990s to the present, betray a greater sense of intimacy while further exploring the boundaries of abstraction. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, Dancing with Reality presents selections from archetypal groups of paintings and prints that demonstrate Katz's experimentation with gesture and line--tree branches that disappear into fog, flower stems that blur on the rippling surface of a moonlit pond. Thus, this bilingual (English/German) exhibition catalog is a testament to the nonagenarian's ceaseless artistic investigation.
