Awful Disclosures by Maria Monk of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery of Montreal is a controversial and sensational memoir that was first published in 1836. The book claims to be the true story of Maria Monk, a young woman who was supposedly forced to become a nun at the Hotel Dieu convent in Montreal, Canada. According to Monk, she was subjected to a life of sexual abuse and torture at the hands of the priests and nuns at the convent. She also claims that the convent was a front for a secret society of priests who engaged in sexual orgies, infanticide, and other heinous acts. The book caused a sensation when it was first published and was widely read and discussed in the United States and Canada. It was also the subject of numerous debates and controversies, with many people questioning the veracity of Monk's claims. Some critics accused Monk of fabricating the story in order to gain fame and fortune, while others argued that she was a victim of abuse who had been silenced by the Catholic Church. Despite the controversy surrounding the book, Awful Disclosures remains an important historical document that sheds light on the treatment of women in religious institutions during the 19th century. It is also an interesting example of sensationalist literature and the power of scandal to capture the public imagination.1836. This volume includes an appendix containing reception of the first editions, sequel of her narrative, review of the case; also a supplement giving more particulars of the nunnery and grounds. This book embraces the contents of the first editions of the author's Awful Disclosures, together with the sequel of her narrative, giving an account of events after her escape from the Nunnery, and of her return to Montreal to procure legal investigation of her charges. It also furnishes all the testimony that was published against her, of every description, as well as that which was given in confirmation of her story. At the close will be found a review of the whole subject, furnished by a gentleman well qualified for the purpose; and finally, a short supplement, giving further particulars interesting to the public. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
