Awful Disclosures by Maria Monk is a controversial and sensational memoir that claims to expose the dark secrets of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery in Montreal, Canada. The book was first published in 1836 and caused a sensation, as it described a convent where nuns were allegedly subjected to sexual abuse, forced abortions, and infanticide. Maria Monk, who claimed to be a former nun at the convent, recounted her own experiences of abuse and corruption, as well as the stories of other nuns and priests with whom she had supposedly spoken. The book was widely read and debated, with some people believing its claims and others dismissing them as lies and propaganda. Today, Awful Disclosures is regarded as a classic example of anti-Catholic literature and a prime example of the convent horror genre that was popular in the 19th century.1836. This volume includes an appendix containing reception of the first editions, sequel of her narrative, review of the case; also a supplement giving more particulars of the nunnery and grounds. This book embraces the contents of the first editions of the author's Awful Disclosures, together with the sequel of her narrative, giving an account of events after her escape from the Nunnery, and of her return to Montreal to procure legal investigation of her charges. It also furnishes all the testimony that was published against her, of every description, as well as that which was given in confirmation of her story. At the close will be found a review of the whole subject, furnished by a gentleman well qualified for the purpose; and finally, a short supplement, giving further particulars interesting to the public. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
