US military forces are being increasingly called upon to execute Foreign Internal Defence (FID) missions. To effectively meet US national objectives, these missions must be tailored to meet the underlying internal defence and development needs of the host nation. The successes and failures of USAF assistance in Vietnam provide lessons for tailoring current and future aviation FID efforts. The Vietnam experience shows that assistance in traditional mission areas must be carefully tailored to avoid negative effects. It also shows that the greatest aviation FID successes may be found in expanding the scope of assistance to include unorthodox uses of airpower manpower and resources.
