We didn't realize it at the time, but we were witnesses to the 'keyboard W scandal'. As you might remember, the new administration discovered vandalism and that the Ws had been removed on their computer keyboards. There was an investigation to find out who did it. It wasn't us.
This mission was to take President Nixon's car and support equipment to Shannon Ireland. This was not only my first flight as a copilot, but my first trip to Europe as well. It was fabulous.
The C-141 had one of the most amazing views in aviation. As I sat in the pilot's seat I had a 180-degree view out the front of the aircraft. Huge picture windows all around showed me unbelievable sights. We would glide over European cities at night seeing the white lights of the buildings and the orange lights of the super highways.

With humor, intrigue, and a deep appreciation for the hand of God in his life, Charles writes about his 33 years serving in the USAF, the FAA, NASA, and working in the White House. During his career, he transformed airline pilot training, paved the way for civilian use of GPS, and held the position of Aviation Advisor at the White House on 9/11.
Charles has performed an emergency landing in a T-37 jet, flown a hot air balloon over Atlanta Hartsfield Airport during rush hour, experienced the transition between the Clinton and Bush Administrations in the White House, and toured the world with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and former Congressman Bob Walker.
