For more than forty years, Paul Hinkson lived inside one of America's most unpredictable industries, where every day brought impossible deadlines, outrageous promotions, celebrity encounters, practical jokes, overnight ratings battles, and just enough chaos to keep everyone coming back for more.
Atomic Radio is an insider's look at the golden age of FM broadcasting-from tiny hometown stations where one person did everything, to major-market radio where personalities became local celebrities and careers could be made or destroyed with a single ratings book. It's a world filled with unforgettable mentors, eccentric DJs, impossible bosses, aspiring musicians, devoted listeners, and stories that are often so unbelievable they could only be true.
But before Paul ever sat behind a microphone, he had to survive himself.
Growing up on Washington's Vashon Island, he struggled with crippling self-doubt and spent his early adulthood searching for confidence in all the wrong places. A series of life-changing decisions eventually led him toward sobriety, where an offhand comment-You have a voice for radio-would alter the course of his life forever.
From disastrous first air shifts and humiliating rookie mistakes to unforgettable interviews, legendary broadcasters, career-defining moments, and the ever-present fear of hearing dead air, Paul takes readers behind the studio door to experience a profession that few people ever truly get to see.
Filled with humor, humility, and remarkable characters, Atomic Radio is more than a memoir of broadcasting. It's a story about finding purpose where you least expect it, building a career one opportunity at a time, and discovering that sometimes the longest journey isn't to a new city or a better job-it's becoming the person you were always capable of being.
Whether you grew up listening to Top 40 radio, classic rock, country, or talk radio-or you're simply fascinated by the stories behind the voices you've welcomed into your car and your home-Atomic Radio offers a front-row seat to one of the most colorful eras in American broadcasting.
The ON AIR light is on. Pull up a chair and come behind the microphone.
