When you dive too deep into the secrets of the past, they might come back to drown you. Delja thinks she's a normal human living a normal life. Her household appliances keep breaking, and neither she nor her single dad can afford to fix them. She's having trouble saving for design school, and on top of all that, her conniving coworker is secretly trying to get her fired from her job. She is trying to find her mother's family (which her dad had asked her not to do) but is not making any progress.
When a disheveled, green-haired, bare-foot woman shows up at the bar ordering shots upon shots of raw rum, Delja starts asking questions. Turns out, two of the local fishermen stole something from the river that belongs to her, and she's here to get it back.
To make matters worse, the woman pays her with an unknown currency and leaves, and now she has to use her lunch money to pay for the rum. By the end of the night, the woman is back, and she has one of the fishermen suspended in the air by his throat with one arm, but the fishermen insist they haven't stolen anything from her.
Flash forward: one of the fishermen turns up dead, and the other insists it was a merman that killed him. But no one believes the drunkard who is always making up stories, not after he had already lied and said that a mercrocodile was the reason he has a prosthetic hand.
Ashes in the Water weaves an intriguing tale of love, family, friendship, singing magic, and underwater battles.
