Art Song in America is a definitive historical and critical examination of the development of the art song genre within the United States. Written by musicologist William Treat Upton, this comprehensive study traces the evolution of American vocal composition from its early influences through the early 20th century. Upton provides an in-depth analysis of the stylistic shifts, harmonic innovations, and poetic influences that shaped the unique character of American song.
The work highlights the contributions of pivotal composers and explores how the fusion of European traditions with American sensibilities gave rise to a distinct musical identity. By examining specific scores and the cultural context of their creation, Upton offers valuable insights into the artistic aspirations of a developing nation. This book remains an essential resource for singers, teachers, and historians interested in the rich heritage of American classical music and the intricacies of vocal performance. It serves as both a scholarly survey and a tribute to the creative spirit that defined a critical era in American music history.
