The Warden of an ancient college is also its archivist. Access to the archive allows him access to information on college members, past and present that he can use to his advantage. Occasionally, however, he meets his match in some of its younger students.
The author, David Bell, is a geologist and Emeritus Fellow of an Oxford college. His research and service have taken him to many parts of the world, from the Solomon Islands to Virginia, from Ascension to Greenland. Though living in Oxford for over sixty years, he and his artist wife Betsy spent much of their time in the south of France, restoring an old farmhouse and developing a taste for Rhône wines.
