What happens when language reaches the edge of its own competence - and something still refuses to be said? This book builds a single, ambitious idea, antisemiosis, into a full body of work: part semiotic theory, part statistical study, part original visual art.
Beginning as a technical problem in translating Paul Celan's poetry, the concept grows into a wide-ranging inquiry spanning Peircean semiotics, Wittgenstein's rule-following paradox, empirical language research, and a statistical analysis of a real poetic corpus. Six plates of abstract, non-figurative visual work - each with its own process essay - put the theory into practice, while a new closing chapter turns the book's method against itself, asking whether a framework built to honor honest failure can also name the dishonest, successful sign-making of atrocity.
Expanded with new sections on museum representation, additional empirical studies, a full statistical appendix, and a glossary for newcomers to the vocabulary, this edition is built for two kinds of readers - those coming for the theory, and those coming for the art - and welcomes either to start wherever they like.
