is a collection ofliteraryworkswrittenintheearly20thcentury. Theanthologypresents a curated selection of German literature from the earliest times up to the 16th century, aiming to highlight the literary merits of various texts while providing educational insights for students of the language. The selections range from heroic poetry to medieval and early modern works, emphasizing the depth and character of German literary heritage. The beginning of the anthology includes a preface by the author, who outlines his goals for the collection: to serve as a companion to a history of German literature while focusing on literary rather than linguistic study. He explains his choice to present modern German translations of older texts, aiming to make them accessible to students who may not have the background to read Old or Middle German. The opening chapters introduce notable works, includ ing fragments of ancient heroic poetry and early Christian texts, showcasing their historical context and cultural significance in the development of Ger manliterature. Eachselectionisdesignedtoengagereaderswiththeaesthetic and thematic qualities of the original texts, fostering a deeper appreciation for the works presented in the anthology The only surviving remnant, in the German language, of the ancient heroic poetry cultivatedbytheGermanic tribespriortotheirChristianization. The precious fragment consists of 69 alliterating verses, which are preserved in a Kassel manuscript of the 8th or 9th century. The language shows a mixture of Low and High German, there are gaps in the text, the meaning of sev eral words is doubtful, and the versification is here and there defective. All this, which some account for by supposing that the manuscript was copied from a version which had been written down from memory and not per fectly recalled, makes translation difficult and uncertain. The poetic ver sion here given is that found in Bötticher and Kinzel's Denkmäler der äl teren deutschen Literatur, 9th edition, 1905, which in the main follows Mül lenhoff's text and theories with regard to gaps, transpositions, etc.
