When I wrote Things to Do in Derby When You're Dead in 2021, in a world still just about shaking off the COVID-19 pandemic like a wet dog climbing from the river, I had no idea it would be one of the most successful pieces of work I have ever created. Having started my professional creative career with zombies (Night of the Living Dead, 1993), a return to the subject matter almost 30 years later did not immediately indicate to me that I was back on track. But the reaction (see the review quotes on the back cover) and subsequent sales of the book took me completely by surprise. Modest by any standards, but stratospheric in comparison to anything I had put forward in my (so far) lacklustre creative career.

So.....a bit more to come, obviously. Having been pressed into getting the first book to the printers by my muse, partner, best friend and creative sounding board, Paula White, what you are about to read is the end result of many formal creative hot-housing forums with her aka breakfast and waking up with You will not believe what I dreamt last night. As a personal purveyor of technicolour Michael Bay/Ridley Scott kinetic dreams, I can only marvel at what goes on in Paula's head during the silent hours. And I fastidiously write it all down.

So....what to expect in this new book? Well, we start with an ill-fated (spoiler, but you knew that anyway) gunboat diplomacy expedition to Haiti. It doesn't end well - does it ever? I will not spoil the heraldic interlude.......We then move on to meet our new hero Terry Mickle on the Mean Streets of Birmingham, then our first fully sentient Chewman, and finally get a scientific (sort of) take on the whole shitshow.

And it was a lot of fun to write.

So...let's get on with it.
