In the years after Prince Rudolf brought his Rose home to bloom in his father's garden, the old magics of Elf-land begin, quietly, to fail. Wren, a forester's daughter with no claim to beauty or fortune, discovers a battered amber horn buried beneath the roots of a blasted pine (the very pine, some say, that once shadowed the hut of Karl Gatz). One breath into it and the borders of Elf-land tremble open before her. But the horn is not a gift; it is a summons, and Wren is bound now to carry it through the four failing courts of Elf-land (the drowned court under the sea, the frozen court of the Frost-Maiden's kin, the airy court in the Cave of the Winds, and the court of the cliff-castle) to relight the four lamps that keep the Balance burning.
Along the way she meets the aged, wiser survivors of the old tales: the Rose herself, silver-haired now; a grim and unforgiving König Tolv; the gray cat, older and stranger than any cat should be. Each gives her a piece of the truth, and a piece of the danger, for the thing unmaking Elf-land was once one of their own.
