Almost. That word is doing a great deal of work in this title, and it deserves an explanation before you spend money on the rest of the book. To call myself intelligent would be arrogant. To call myself stupid would be false modesty, which is really just arrogance wearing a disguise. So I have settled on almost, which is the only honest word available to a person who thinks too much and understands too little. These essays are the record of that thinking. Some of it holds up. Some of it, in hindsight, does not. I have left it mostly as it was written, on the theory that a man who edits his own foolishness out of existence is not being honest, merely tidy. If none of this makes you smarter, I apologize. If it makes you feel slightly less alone in your own uncertainty, then the title has done its job. Almost.
