I wrote every one of these pages while staying here at the Overlook Hotel-my Overlook-during a winter that most people couldn't have endured. From the moment I arrived, I felt as though I already knew the place, every hallway and corner whispering that I belonged to it, or perhaps that it belonged to me. The silence, the snow, the endless rooms... they focused me, sharpened my mind, urged me toward the work I'd always meant to finish. You can't imagine how clearly things come into view when there are no distractions-when all the static of ordinary life simply melts away and leaves only purpose.
Of course, Wendy and Danny didn't understand that. They fussed, they questioned, they wandered where they shouldn't. The hotel tried to show them, to guide them, but they resisted in every small, irritating way. And yes, there came a point when they needed to be corrected-set back on the proper path-if I was ever going to complete what I'd started. But despite those... interruptions, I pushed on. I stayed at my typewriter, day after day, while the Overlook itself seemed to lean over my shoulder, urging me forward. And now, here it is: the book finished at last, shaped by these halls, this silence, and a winter that revealed who I truly am.
