Ajar: Southern China Fairy Tales is a collection of prose, poetry, and fable written across a single year - from the psychiatric wards of Zhuzhou to the neon-lit streets of Guangzhou, from a border crossing in Shenzhen to a small animal kingdom where the moon runs three minutes slow.
These are stories about the people who push carts and carry urns, who stand too long in shampoo aisles, who wake at four in the morning to a blue that belongs to no time zone. They are also fairy tales: a pig prince who cannot open a package, a raccoon mathematician who repairs the moon one fraction at a time, a deer courier who delivers a letter to the wrong place - and finds it was never wrong.
The door in the title is neither open nor closed. It is the door most of us have stood at - pressing one eye to the light, not yet ready to go through.
