Airstrips at Dawn is a memoir-inflected coming-of-age novel set in the remote airstrips and wide skies of New Zealand's Far North.
In the early 1960s, after leaving university due to a depressive illness, a young man returns home and takes a job with an aerial topdressing firm. What begins as tea-making and sweeping floors soon leads to the loader driver's seat - and to a world of early starts, isolated paddocks, and pilots who fly by instinct and nerve.
From his cramped perch behind the fertiliser hopper, he witnesses the strange mix of danger and beauty that defines the job: floating teapots in sudden weightlessness, waves splashing the wings over Ninety Mile Beach, a total eclipse sweeping across the land, and the quiet griefs and private rituals of the men he works alongside.
As the seasons turn, the work becomes a kind of education - rough, honest, and unforgettable. Through moments of humour, fear, wonder, and human connection, he begins to understand the land, the sky, and himself.
