Thomas Paine turns the revolutionary principles of liberty and reason toward religion, challenging inherited authority and defending the individual's right to examine belief without fear. In The Age of Reason, Paine declares his belief in one God while rejecting organized religion, priestly power, miracles, prophecy, and the claim that any sacred text represents an infallible divine revelation. He argues that genuine faith must arise from reason, conscience, and the evidence of the natural world rather than tradition or institutional command.
Examining both the Old and New Testaments, Paine questions their authorship, internal consistency, historical reliability, and moral authority. His criticism is direct and frequently severe, but his purpose is not to promote atheism. As a deist, he believed that creation itself provided rational evidence of a creator and that human beings could approach religious truth without churches, creeds, or revealed scripture. Written during the political and religious upheavals of the French Revolution, The Age of Reason became one of the most controversial books of its era. It damaged Paine's reputation among many former admirers but exerted a lasting influence on deism, biblical criticism, religious skepticism, freedom of conscience, and the separation of church and state. More than two centuries later, it remains a forceful defense of intellectual independence and the right to question religious authority.
