He comes home with a basket of tellan mushrooms, a dead wizard's silver compass in one pocket, and a demonic ring on his finger that won't stop talking. Her name is Vex. She is three hundred years old, deeply opinionated about egg technique, and the single most powerful Accord artifact currently in circulation. She has chosen Cael with the calm certainty of something that has been waiting for the right person and has finally found one. He is not sure he deserves this. She is not sure he deserves it either, but she is staying anyway.
Meanwhile, in the village below the castle, Lira Ashveil has been dreaming of a library that doesn't exist, carrying a compass that points at the boy up the hill, and trying very hard not to admit she already knows what both of these things mean.
When demons begin arriving in Cael's root cellar - and then in considerably larger numbers at the castle walls - the two of them do the only sensible thing: flee into a world neither has ever seen, armed with magic they don't fully understand, in the direction a compass is pointing because it seems to know something they don't.
The road south-east will give them companions they didn't ask for and couldn't do without: a halfling rogue who reads your intentions before you act on them, a half-orc barbarian who is working very hard on her anger and occasionally breaks walls, and a Scholar's apprentice carrying thirty years of a dead man's notes. Together they are hunting the fragments of the Hollow King - an ancient god of consumption, shattered four thousand years ago, slowly pulling itself back together from the inside of the world.
