A victorious king returns home from Troy, but the house he enters is already filled with blood, hatred, prophecy, and revenge. In Agamemnon, Aeschylus transforms the aftermath of the Trojan War into one of the most powerful tragedies in world drama. Agamemnon comes back to Argos in triumph, bringing Cassandra as captive and prize, while Queen Clytemnestra waits with a welcome that conceals years of grief, rage, and deadly intention.
The play is the first part of the Oresteia, the only complete surviving trilogy from ancient Greek drama. Its central conflict grows from a chain of violence: the sacrifice of Iphigenia, the crimes of the house of Atreus, the destruction of Troy, the humiliation of Cassandra, and Clytemnestra's demand for justice through murder. Aeschylus gives the story immense moral weight, asking whether revenge can ever end revenge, whether victory can be separated from guilt, and whether divine justice works through human suffering.
First performed in 458 BCE, Agamemnon remains essential reading for students and readers of Greek tragedy, classical literature, mythology, drama, war literature, and the origins of Western theater. Its language, imagery, choral power, and terrible momentum make it one of the great works about pride, sacrifice, betrayal, political power, and the cost of inherited violence.
