Afrisophy Book II: The African Mind - Knowledge, Memory, Language, Intellectual Sovereignty, and the Reclamation of African Thought examines a consequential question facing Africa: What happens when a people recover the authority to understand themselves through their own intellectual categories?
Written by Scholar Manfred Ayuk, this second volume of the Afrisophy series turns toward the African mind-not as a biological or racial category, nor as a claim that Africa possesses one uniform way of thinking, but as an intellectual space shaped by knowledge, memory, language, community, history, education, environment, and civilization. The book examines how African ways of knowing have been transmitted, disrupted, marginalized, preserved, and reconstructed.
At the center of the work is Afrisophy-the African Science of Wisdom-an African-centered discipline devoted to the systematic study of African reality, knowledge, humanity, civilization, and wisdom. Book II advances this project by asking who possesses the authority to define knowledge and what is lost when African realities are understood primarily through categories developed elsewhere.
Education is a foundational concern. Indigenous education, experiential learning, cultural transmission, self-reliance, and decolonizing education provide a framework for understanding learning as more than formal schooling.
The book also examines personhood and community, exploring how individuals exist within networks of responsibility, belonging, reciprocity, social memory, and human flourishing.
Memory occupies a central place. The African mind is presented not simply as an individual cognitive phenomenon but as a carrier of collective and civilizational remembrance. Oral tradition, storytelling, cultural memory, historical consciousness, and intergenerational transmission become mechanisms through which societies preserve knowledge and continuity.
Language is equally important because naming is never intellectually neutral. Language can preserve conceptual worlds, but it can also carry inherited classifications. The book therefore explores linguistic diversity, colonial knowledge systems, endangered languages, and the relationship between language and thought.
One of the book's most provocative interventions concerns categories historically imposed upon African realities. Terms such as myth, folklore, paganism, primitive, witchcraft, and tribalism are reconsidered not merely as vocabulary but as classifications capable of shaping how African knowledge and civilization are perceived.
The discussion extends into African understandings of time, place, nature, leadership, ethics, knowledge, and social existence. African intellectual traditions are placed in dialogue with global scholarship without making external frameworks the final judges of African reality.
Ultimately, The African Mind argues for intellectual sovereignty: Africa's capacity to name its realities, develop concepts from its experiences, preserve its intellectual inheritance, critically examine its traditions, engage knowledge from elsewhere, and produce ideas capable of contributing to humanity.
This is not a call for African intellectual isolation. It is a call for intellectual agency.
Afrisophy Book II invites readers into a project of reclamation-not a return to an imagined past, but the recovery, critical examination, development, and future transmission of African thought. The African mind emerges not as a museum of inherited traditions, but as a living intellectual force capable of remembering, questioning, creating, transforming, and contributing original knowledge to the world.
