Algernon is a tall, wrinkly, magical old man with a very long silvery beard tied into three knots so it does not trail along the forest floor. He lives in the oldest oak tree at the beginning of the wood and carries his magical digitstick wherever he goes. With his digitstick, Algernon can do almost anything, but his greatest gift is guiding children through the hidden wonders of the forest.
When little Erin visits the woods with her mummy and Nanny's dogs, Bruno and Blodwyn, she discovers that the forest is not dark and scary at all. It is alive with warmth, wonder, laughter, and friendship. Erin soon learns that her mummy once knew Algernon too, but now that she is grown up, she can no longer see him. The magic of Ashenground Woods belongs to children, animals, and those who still believe.
In The Bursting Nut Tree, Erin meets Cyril the squirrel, a cheeky little character with round cheeks, a tubby tummy, and a noisy wooden go-cart piled high with nuts. Cyril has been very busy preparing for winter, but perhaps a little too busy. He has hidden so many nuts inside one small oak tree that the poor tree begins to creak, groan, bulge, and finally burst.
As acorns tumble everywhere and the animals gather round, Algernon gently helps Cyril understand that keeping everything for himself is not the answer. With Erin's giggles, Algernon's kindness, and a little woodland magic, Cyril learns that sharing can feel much lighter than holding on to everything alone.
