In this novel, David Mandel masterfully blends humor and wit, drawing inspiration from classic Spanish literature and Voltaire's Candide. The protagonist, Luis Cabrejos, a doctor of Spanish grammar and the eccentric founder (and sole member) of the International Institute of Nameology, narrates his autobiography with a mix of irony and charm. His journey is one of unpredictable twists, taking him from his native Lima, where he studies at a British-run school, to a university in Madrid, and back to Lima, where he endures a stint in prison before finding himself living among a remote tribe in the Peruvian jungle.
Eventually, his life comes full circle when he returns to the school of his youth-this time as a Spanish teacher. Despite the many setbacks and absurdities he faces, Cabrejos remains an irrepressible optimist, viewing his misadventures with unflagging enthusiasm. As his journey concludes, he becomes consumed by an irrational obsession, much like the very teacher whose place he now fills.
Set against the backdrop of 20th-century Latin America, the novel offers a sharp satire on a region plagued by corruption, political instability, and military coups. Mandel's deft storytelling not only entertains but also serves as a biting critique of societal dysfunction, all while maintaining the protagonist's hopeful spirit.
