This address, delivered by David Litchard Kiehle on the occasion of laying the cornerstone of the University of North Dakota, explores the foundational role of intelligence in the development of Christian civilization. Kiehle's oration emphasizes the importance of education in fostering societal progress and moral development. The speech provides insight into the aspirations and values that shaped the early vision for the University of North Dakota and reflects broader 19th-century American attitudes toward education, religion, and progress.
