Based on a true story by Na'Stasia Cole AKA Shay, this short story tells the abstract life of an African American girl born in the North but raised in the South. Growing up she struggled with mental, sexual, and physical abuse. As the years went on, she found herself struggling with being a foster child at 12 years old, going into over eight different foster homes in several different counties. She got pregnant at 15 years old and had a baby at 16 years old, while being in the 10th grade. This book talks about the true struggle of fighting statistics while learning how to survive. She was hardheaded with a temper like no other, with no mother or father present she felt as if no one could tell her anything. Shay had to go through a lot of trials and errors to finally see the bigger picture. As Shay grew older life continued to taunt her as she suffered a great deal of toxic situations, but don't get it twisted Shay is a very courageous fighter, she shows strength, book/street smart, and so much more. This book goes through a lot of up and downs, but the key is having a relationship with God and never giving up no matter what's against you.
