Cole Mercer came home for a funeral. His dead mother apparently scheduled the rest of his summer.
Fifteen years ago, Cole left Bellwether, Tennessee, angry at his father, angry at God, wrecked by his brother's death, and determined to build a life that required absolutely nothing from the place he came from.
It worked. Mostly anyway.
But now his mother is dead. Cole expects to bury her, sign some papers, clean out the house, and get back to Atlanta.
Instead, Evelyn Mercer has left behind eight envelopes.
One for each Sunday.
The first asks him to eat dinner at the table like a human being.
Things get considerably worse from there. Because Evelyn didn't just leave Cole letters.
She left him the old Mercer Feed property, and Cole quickly discovers that his own development company has been trying to buy it. The land is worth millions. Selling could put him in line for the promotion he's spent years chasing.
It could also displace the Bellwether Community Table, where people come for groceries, job help, emergency assistance, after-school meals, and the kind of help that doesn't look particularly impressive on a development rendering.
And the person running much of it is Hannah Reed.
Hannah was seventeen when she loved Cole the first time. She's not seventeen anymore and neither is he.
She's a widow, a mother, and a woman who learned how to survive things Cole wasn't there to see. She loved her husband deeply, misses him honestly, and refuses to treat that love like something she has to apologize for before she can feel anything new.
Cole, meanwhile, is still very good at leaving.
Leaving conversations before they become uncomfortable.
Leaving towns before they can need him.
Leaving people before they get the chance to matter too much.
Even leaving God behind because a God who allowed his younger brother to die was not a God Cole had any interest in understanding.
His mother knew all of that.
Which is probably why the letters keep getting harder.

What begins as an obligation becomes something Cole never planned for; A fight over a building becomes a fight over what kind of man he wants to be. Hannah becomes more than the girl he remembers. Her son, Micah, gets under his defenses with alarming efficiency. And the faith Cole thought he had buried begins asking questions he can no longer dismiss with sarcasm.
No neat questions or easy ones.
The kind that remain after somebody you love dies and ask whether forgiveness means pretending nothing happened.
The kind that ask whether loving someone new betrays someone who is gone.
Does coming home means returning to the place that hurt you or finally becoming someone who doesn't need an exit in every room?
