Emotionally forceful account of survival and brotherhood - The BookLife Prize (Publishers Weekly)

A unique autobiographical perspective... identity beyond conventional war fiction - The BookLife Prize

Five Marines cut their palms in a hangar at midnight and swore it:
Braca po krvi. Blood brothers.

Four Americans and a Croatian kid who had already survived his own war. Murphy. Rod. Danny. Toby. And Drazen - eighteen, just off the plane from Zagreb, everything he owned in a duffel that still smelled like home.

For six years they survive what should have killed them. Then Congo. Something happens in a crater in the jungle - something Drazen will never speak of. He comes back wrong. Won't eat. Won't sleep. Won't answer the phone. A hotel room in Crete, curtains nailed shut, twenty-four missed calls. He has already decided.

His brothers decide different.

THREE POUNDS is a story about what we do for the people we love, what it costs, and whether the men who swore to die together can keep one of their own alive. Inspired by true events. The author is one of the five. He served. The rest is on the page.

A note on the writing: this book is written exactly as it was lived - in the languages these men loved each other in, present tense, no narrator. You are not told about these men. You are dropped into their comms.
