The Province of Upper Canada never had a common culture. From its founding in 1791, Upper Canada was populated by waves of immigrants of diverse cultures and ethnicities. Yet despite ideological differences and instances of political and cultural conflict, Upper Canada managed to evolve as a 'peaceable kingdom' based on a prevailing adherence to several basic beliefs: viz., the rule of law and equality before the law; the adoption of limited constitutional monarchy as the preferred form of government; freedom of religion and religious toleration; and the commitment to upholding a common standard of morality. The present study examines the religious, political, social, and moral values espoused by three philosophies of being, and identifies the commonalities within their differences.
