When researcher James Tucci is found dead from a medication overdose, the inquest returns a verdict of suicide. His wife Lucy, who knew him better than any inquest could, does not accept it. Neither does Lestrade, a corporate auditor who cleared the programme James worked on and has not slept properly since.
Lestrade brings the case to Sherlock Holmes: former actuary, former MI6, now an independent consultant who takes the cases that official processes cannot hold. The investigation is narrated by Dr John Watson, recently returned from military service, a psychologist trained to read people and drawn to a simple question: what stops human beings from doing what they know to be right?
What they uncover is not a conspiracy in the conventional sense. Nobody decided to kill James Tucci. What happened was worse: a chain of institutional decisions, each procedurally correct, each making perfect sense within its own framework, that together removed James from his data, his colleagues, and finally his life. At its centre is Professor Moriarty, governance consultant and architect of a system so elegant that nobody inside it can see what it does to the people who try to tell the truth.
Holmes calls it an architecture of blindness. Moriarty calls it best practice. A young man with a loving family is in the ground either way.
221B Baker Street is a modern literary mystery in the tradition of Arthur Conan Doyle, with Holmes and Watson reimagined for a world of programme assurance, institutional accountability, and the particular cruelty of organisations that function perfectly while the people inside them cannot.

In 1887 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson and, in doing so, created something that transcended his own remarkable career. Holmes and Watson have been with us for nearly a hundred and forty years. They have been reimagined, reinterpreted, and reinvented across every medium and every generation, and they endure because Doyle built them from something true: the belief that careful observation, honest inquiry, and genuine partnership can cut through complexity that defeats lesser approaches. I am deeply grateful to Doyle for creating these characters, and very conscious of the responsibility that comes with borrowing them. Doyle's stories are now in the public domain. I have tried to honour that gift by telling a story that is faithful to the spirit of the originals while exploring questions that matter now. Doyle's Holmes revealed truth through the science of deduction, this Holmes reveals it through the science of observation: seeing what is actually there, rather than what the frameworks, processes and governance structures tell us should be there. This book is part of the Born Agile series, which explores, through different forms, a single idea: that human beings are naturally capable of extraordinary things, and that the systems we build around ourselves too often interfere with that capability rather than supporting it. Other books in the series use satire, history and time travel to examine this idea. This one uses crime fiction.
